60's Ampeg SB 12 Portaflex

Sign in to disble this ad
ZZOLD! For sale this very clean early 60's Ampeg SB-12 Portaflex amp, 25 watts of sweet tube tone for bass or guitar. The head and cabinet may not be original to each other, the cab label says 'NC'. Regardless, these have been together for a long, long time. I call the condition PDG or pretty damn good. The chrome is good and the latches are tight. The metal logo is cracked but all there, and the tolex covering has minimal tears and scuffs. The only thing you might want to replace is the wood tray the head bolts to, it is rough. These can be had for about $40.
This was just gone over by one of the best tube techs in the midwest Dave Lancaster: Mad Scientist, Tube Amp Tech, Top Notch BBQ Griller. and it's running in peak form. New German caps, grounded cord and fuse holder. I have saved all the old parts should you want them. It has a new replacement plexi badge and tilt back bar. The speaker is a new Celestion neo 12" bass driver which gives max volume per watt and saves a few lbs. Thanks for looking.

$800 plus actual shipping Conus only please.

The pre tubes are both 12AX7's, a Mesa and a Fender. The power tubes are older Amperex 7868's. The rectifier tube was replaced, it is a JJ GZ 34S.

Nice looking amp, but isn't it a B-12? Why are the ports blocked?

The head is marked SB-12. The paper label in the cab says SB-12 NC and lists the tubes differently with 7 total, and the power tubes as 6L6'S. I've never found out what the NC stands for, the N I assume like a B-15N meaning a circuit designation.
This cab is the only one like it I've seen with the centered speaker and 2 slots. It is also a bit shorter than the regular SB-12 cabinets. Everything looks original inside.
I've been told that these may have been paired up right out of the shop new, there were lots of anomalies back then. I believe the plastic handle dates it to '63, but I know it is early 60's for sure.

PS- Correction: the cab sticker lists 3 preamp tubes (6SL7) vs. the 2 12AX7's in the head. Apparently the SB-12 NC had an extra pre tube.

Yeah, the amp looks like my SB-12. I was mainly referring to the cabinet. To me, it looks like the pictures I have seen of B-12 cabinets. Either way, this is a great little amp for someone looking the Ampeg tube sound in a small platform. Great for practice and small gigs.

Geez, I'm blind. Plain as day the label says B 12 N C. My tiny brain kept putting an S in front! A B 12 cab here folks!

I bought this with my Clevenger EUB in mind, but it really sounds fantastic with the old Jazz Bass.
