AMP A.M.P SL-1 bass preamp (rare, early 80s) PRICE DROP

Sign in to disble this ad
$250 inc of shipping CONUS, or best offer.

A used Amplified Music Products SL-1 bass preamp from the early 80s. Possibly the same as used in some of the higher end AMP amps of the time.

This is a rare, collectable high end unit using high quality components. Really nice smooth, punchy sound. These don't turn up very often.

I've had it about 4 years, it was refurbished at The Good Guys in Saint Paul MN about 3-4 years ago. It needed some pots replacing, I contacted ThunderFunk directly (same engineer who designed the SL-1) and got replacement pots. Some of the values were different than the original so this unit is NOT strictly to factory spec. I can't tell any difference without Abing with another unit, but I assume some of the EQ responses have changed a bit. This has not affected is usability to my ears but I am mentioning for full transparency.

I have used this unit very little, I use dirtier sounding preamps at the moment and the front end of a Carving B1500 for EQ. Don't expect to get grind/overdrive out of this unit, you will need other pedals to do that. It needs a home where it will get some use and enjoyment.

This is a well equipped and very practical preamp, its vintage perhaps betrayed by a lack of EQ in the 2000-4000hz range. Cranking the treble will increase these freqs, but might be too aggressive on a full range tweeter equipped cabinet. Unit was designed when tweeters were more rarely employed in bass cabs. To my ears, the basic voicing seems to be 'boutique flat' with many extremes available with the powerful smooth sounding EQ and 'enhance' button. The enhance model can be used for a deep sparkly 'slap' sound, but sounds brutal if you run a distortion pedal though it.

Hi and Low inputs
Gain with clip light
Limiter with 'active' light.
Enhance Mode - seems to scoop the mids, boosts lows and highs. Very aggressive but still 'smooth' tone with subsonic lows.
Bass and Treble shelving EQ
4 band semi parametric eq
40-100 hz
100-200 hz
200-400hz
400-1k
Tone Balance: alters bass/high frequences around a central eq point - so as low end is reduced, high end is boosted (I think). This allows very quick adjustments for different rooms or speaker cabinets WITHOUT changing your basic EQ pattern. Unusual but again, pragmatic, feature.
Crossover - 100-1khz. You can run the full range outputs AND the crossover outputs.

Outputs
Crossover High
Crossover Low
Full Range Out 1
Full Range Out 2
Balanced Out
Direct/Line swtich

BUMP -

PRICE REDUCED TO $250 inc shipping CONUS. Otherwise I'll prob be putting it on ebay. I'd rather find a happy home for it here on TB.
