I wasn't sure whether to put this here in Amps FS or in Recording Gear FS; it's designed more for recording, but I have been using it as a bass preamp, and it drives any power amp beautifully--it has very strong output.
It consists of three stages, each of which has it own inputs and outputs:
1) a mic preamp with phantom power. Lots of gain available, very low noise.
2) a four-band EQ: two fully parametric bands, and two semi-parametric shelving bands. Each band can be engaged or disengaged individually, and the overall EQ has a master bypass switch as well.
3) a VCA-based compressor. It features a dual release law, meaning it automatically speeds the release time for spikes that are fast and strong, and slows the release time for shallower peaks. This allows some of the most "natural" and invisible compression. It has a full set of controls (attack, ratio, threshold, etc.). It works great as a hard peak limiter. The comp also has its own bypass switch.
All three stages are normalled together in that order, but you can rearrange them by cabling their jacks any way you like.
One important caveat! There is no instrument input jack, only mic or line inputs. So to use it as a bass preamp, you have to use an external DI box, or a pedal-type preamp with a balanced output. It seems like a clever tech could probably add an instrument input without too much difficulty, but it's not there now. I used a Radial JDI and a Countryman Type 85, both with great results. This would also be great for somebody who uses a BDDI or similar for their tone shaping and amp simulation, as the Ashly will not color or muddy that effect.
These units are actually pretty rare--it took me over a year to find this one. It's in excellent condition both cosmetically and functionally. I'm looking for $220 shipped in the US; PM me for international postage cost. I'll consider trades for any compressor I haven't reviewed yet (see my sig). Let me know if you have any questions!
