description from the el site:
The Mike-E™ from Empirical Labs is a modern digitally controlled Microphone Preamplifier chocked with unusual features to warm and soften the source, along with an excellent compressor/limiter.
Mike-E offers an incredible performance transformer-coupled mic preamp, whose noise floor is far below any microphone’s self noise.
The one-of-a-kind ‘CompSat’ section is an uncompromising compressor and saturator circuit that offers versatile ‘coloring’, and classic knee compression.

description from me:
the pre amp section is very clean, but no cold. it has extremely even response, nothing is hyped so it is very true to it's source. it responds well to heavier dynamics. it works excellent with erb's and active electronics.
compression is killer, lots of classic variations to mangling available within the simple settings, and the blend is ideal.
no eq besides high pass (which does provide a little bump at 80, but it's minimal). the high emphasis basically makes the comp more sensitive to high frequencies. has the option to have an insert point installed between pre and comp for independent operation/ insertion.
i have 2, and am keeping one.
perfect working order, tiny bit of rack rash.
original box.
