F/S B.A.T T BASS ADVANCED TUBE TECHNOLOGY PREAMWRECORDINGAMIP

Sign in to disble this ad
The Hughes & Kettner BATT has been developed in
conjunction with bass manufacturer ESH and German
bassist Peter Sonntag. It has been fine-tuned to meet
the requirements of demanding bass players. The
BATT is a compact “Bass Sound Machine” which
enables you to obtain great tube tone with the utmost
of ease. The tone controls are very effective and
precise, and the boost functions offer instanteanous
access to several fundamentally different kinds of
sound. A full complement of connecting jacks make
the BATT ideal in a broad range of applications from
rehearsal to studio to stage.

That sure is an interesting little box. How do you find the tone shaping?

In particular, what I'm wondering is about the tone shaping (not the tone) - the "one tone knob" seems pretty limited but maybe not?

Notes from a BATT fan: I think it's one of the coolest pieces of gear out there.

They were made in Germany and ooze quality, they're little bricks. In case peeps don't know it, the H & K BATT has a tube pre & tube power amp, though it's only like five watts. With a halfway efficient cab, it makes a nice little practice amp for home playing. Other than the SWR IOD, I don't know of any other bass preamps that contain an actual low-wattage tube power amp. For recording, you can take a line level signal that is pre or post the tube power amp for many different tonal & grind shadings. I'd buy this one as a backup for my BATT but I already have a H & K Crunchmaster too (it's a guitar version of the BATT, was later renamed the Bluesmaster).

Depending on your bass & cabinet, the BATT may or may not give you enough eq options. If you've got an active bass, I'd think you'd be pretty covered. It's got three eq boosts, : lows (6 dB from 40 to 400), mids (just right, nice & punchy, just 2 dB, though it seems like more, from 500 to 2k), & highs (8 dB from 1k to 20k). In addition to the preset eq boosts, it's got a single tone pot that functions like the ones on early guitar amps. Turn it counterclockwise and your tone gets bassier, deeper while cutting the highs. Turn it clockwise and the tone gets progressively brighter with less body.

I'm running the instrument level from my BATT into an Ampeg SVPCL preamp and am pretty much done, it's a killer combination. The BATT provides the tubey warmth, drive and air the SVPCL lacks on it's own. Since I mostly use passive basses, the additional eq on the Ampeg pre is helpful.

I have owned several devices with tilting EQ's, and it's a mixed bag. On the "good side" there's the Diamond BCP-1, which has a super wide range of usable tones without losing the low B if you turn to the high side; On the "bad side" there are a bunch of tilting EQ's out there where you start to lose low end way too much as soon as you turn clockwise past noon. So if this BATT one doesn't cut the lows unpleasantly when you turn to the treble side, then like the Diamond it will surprise you with the range of tones you can get.

Free bump for a great guy

I played through this with my newly acquired frankenbass (courtesy of rapisme as well) I didn't get to tinker with it but plugging and playing I was set as is. Warm and clear, all the range my 5'er needed and then some!

Bump for a great sounding piece. I use the BATT with a Wizzy 110 when playing with acoustic guitars that run through in a small PA. Small coffee house type stuff. Sounds great. In addition to the one knob tone, there are boost controls for the low, mid and high. I replaced the stock tubes with Telefunkens, really nice, fat, and smooth. If I want more mids, I'll might put in some different tubes....... Lapicide
