Hey all, DB 359:
This is Aguilar's only -- and discontinued -- integrated all tube amplifier. It's kind of a neat piece of Aguilar history -- it's place in the lineup was just after the DB 680/DB 728 monster, and right before the venerable DB 750 was released. I think it's a piece of audiophile gold that deserves someone who can use it. History: I bought this less ~1 month ago from another TBer who is an Aguilar endorser. He used in the studio exclusively, and it comes with the stock preamp tubes. It's in good condition, with a few surface scratches on the top cover, and a few here and there elsewhere. It looks to be in great condition for being a few years old. While I've had it, took it to a tech to give it a good run-through and he replaced the power tubes with Svetlana 6550C's (per my request). These are the same type of power tubes that Aguilar shipped with the new DB 359's (they were rebranded Svetlana's to be precise), and they sound great!
One neat thing about this amp is that Aguilar's manual lays out the biasing procedure for the end-user to do themselves (you don't absolutely need a tech to just change the power tubes). Cool! This should be done anytime you replace the power tubes with a different tube of a different character (i.e., if you wanted to put in Sovtek's, or uber cool winged C 6550's or something). [Note that if you just call up thetubestore.com and tell them the number on the power tube, they could send you a matched quad with of that exact type you have in the amp, and then you shouldn't have to re-bias.]
-There are three bias contact points for your multimeter leads and two little bias adjustment pots.
-All you need is a small screw-driver and a multimeter and you could change the power tubes yourself, saving yourself the ~$75 tech fee.
Replacement powertubes are around $150-$200, and the end-user 'biasability' is really a really cool (and money saving) feature on this amp! Sounds awesome! It's THE most smooth tube amp i've used (besides maybe the SA200). I really like it for supportive music -- it's got such a fat warm tone, that it makes you want to play LESS, just to hear the notes ring out With a couple knob turns, you can get to a quicker tone (but not solid-state quick mind you…there's always a little tubey give) perfect for funk/fusion. I usually dial in the gain around 11, and the master set to your volume needs.
The overdriven sound is probably not SVTish, but more grindy. I think of the amp as a great example of a fat and clean tube amp, more than an overdriven Orange type amp or something
I forgot to mention: it has a great DI. While not tube driven, the pre-EQ contains the signal through the V1 input stage, and the post-EQ mode takes your signal through all three preamp tubes for the full effect! Very fat. My REDDI was more B-15ish, while the DI on the Aguilar really sounds like an Aguilar amp/cab combo being mic'd up, resulting in a MORE tubey sound than I found with the REDDI. Feel: "Tubey girth" is probably the best description for the notes that come out of this thing. From the lowest notes on the B string even to the upper register of the G string, every note has sooo much weight! It feels like an all-tube amp, that's for sure! It's got more punch than your average tube amp. I have heard a few TBers describe the power section as solid state 'quick,' but i disagree. Rest assured, this feels like a tube amp! Power: 200 watts @ 4 or 8 ohms (2 ohm mod can easily be done by a tech or the new owner if he/she is savvy). I know some guys here have complained about the volume (or lack there of), but I don't see how one would need anymore stage volume (of course, i'm not a big rocker, and I don't play big corporate gigs, so I can't speak for those guys' needs). $1400 shipped paypal. SOLD! DB 112 (tweed): This is the cab I paired with my DB 359 and it is one sweet 12" loaded cab let me tell ya! Easy to schlep because of the nice handle, and plenty for most of my gigs. Picking up a Bergantino HS210 to hopefully pair with my future SA200, and so the DB 112 needs to go! Awesome condition. Comes with original box/shipping materials straight from Amazon.com from about a month ago. $550 $500 shipped paypal. <=== Price drop on 2/26

I think most people that say 200 tube watts are not enough are crazy, or just trying to push it through 1 or 2 small speakers. I can run my 160w all tube Peavey Alphabass head through my Fender 810 Pro and easily keep up in a loud rock band.

It's more of a practical move toward my ultimate goal for right now: I've been doing a lot of gear switchin the last couple of months, and currently have my eyes set on the all tube amp from Sadowsky (yes, another one..shouldn't have sold the first one!!). Until then, i'm keeping my DB 750, and am going to try and rustle up a used Bergantino HS210 to pair with the it (and the SA200 hopefully )
To be honest though, there are some guys on here who legitimately need more than 200 clean watts to gig with. For those guys, this setup (which is more smooth than super edgy) wouldn't cut it. I'm not one of them, though! I love this amp, just gotta let it go for financial/practical reasons.
Thanks for the bump! |

(Note: would always prefer to avoid ebay mostly because of those stinkin' fees) |
