Can you describe the sound of the "power reduction" circuit. Sounds like a fancy overdrive but supposedly more than that? Your thoughts?

From what I read and gathered, it's almost like a bass head "power brake"???

Well... that doesn't make any sense. Tube power amplifiers break up when pushed hard, and many people like the sound (which is distinctly different from tube preamp overdrive), but many want to achieve this sound without actually having to turn the amp up all the way... thus the intercession of a power brake... which converts output power into heat and reduces the overall gain after the amps output section.

Being that this is a solid state power section... there is no power amp breakup... from what I can tell this is a circuit meant to sound like an output tube breaking up... where you can push this "output tube" to breakup but still control the overall output volume of the head separately. My question is... is that correct .... and if so how does it sound?

I have had 2 of these a few years ago. Traded one away, and sold the other. It's a bass head I should have kept. The Voltage knob acts like a power tube emulator. I thought it sounded really good. I never gigged with it, or really turned them up loud, so I can't comment much more then that. The preamp section is the exact same as the SVP-CL preamp. That's a fantastic preamp. You can really wake it up with some nice high gain preamp tubes like the JJ ECC803S 12ax7 tubes, and JAN Military 12au7 tubes. That was sweet!

From my experience with this head, the power reduction circuit stills allows you to get that Tube growl at almost every volume level...As mentioned previously, this amp does have the well known SVPCL preamp as well.

I've owned SVP-CL's in the past and loved them!! Trying to see if I can afford to buy this amp!

Any trades you're open to?

I have nothing like that..... Here's a list of what's available just in case anything sparks your interest.... I'd really like this amp.... an SVP-CL / power amp is the cheaper option but the Power Reduction circuit is worth the difference.

Available stuffs:

-Ampeg SVP-Pro preamplifier 9.5/10 just retubed with matched set.

-Carvin DCM1000L 1,000 watts B/M @ 4ohms

-Lakland 44-01

Miscl rack cases... all Calzone ATA rated.

Bump-for-an-amp-that-I-want-but-have-no-monay-way-no-monay-yay-ya

I have a '73 P maple/mocha-root beer/alder with a Jazz pup routing. Nicely done (professionally routed), and in very good shape overall. - the J pup is 70's spacing.

Has original everthing except for the J pup (which is a black dimarzio), and the pot for it. The bass is in very good shape, and the body is very light actually and the paint on it is pretty intact. Frets are top shape as well.

I've searched my work computer here, but I don't even have a lousy pic of it.

If intererested, I can take some shots this evening and send them to you.
