FS/FT Thunderfunk TFB-420, Refurbished and updated with gold chip...now 440 watts!

You know the name...you know the heritage. These are killer bass amps. This is a newly refurbished TFB-420 that just came back from Dave Funk. (to the tune of $200) The output on these was originally rated at 400 watts. This one is now 440 watts. Dave basically rewired the inside, installed new and updated switches, replaced the filter board, installed the gold chip etc. So, the outcome is 40 more watts of power. And as we all know, Dave's power ratings are VERY conservative to begin with. The chip changes and rewiring make the amp slightly brighter and much louder. In addition, the filter board and gold chip reduce distortion at all frequencies. I can provide all the documentation from Dave Funk as to what was done. Talking to him as he did it..he was like a kid in a candy store being able to refurb a 420. It was quite entertaining.

Basically, the only reason I am getting rid of it...I liked it so much, I sold my Shuttlemax12 and bought a TFB-750A. This one now sounds almost exactly like the TFB-750A...with obviously less power.

$650 shipped..in excellent condition. Trades, I am somewhat open to. Mainly, I am looking for an Aguilar DB212. Beyond that, I am really not looking for anything.

In your opinion did the mod change the tone of the 420 ?
I have had two 420's and two 550's. One 550 with the chip. I must say I preferred the tone of the 420. more tube like to my ears.

To me, it is slightly brighter now while still maintaining the warmth that it had before. Slightly more punch but that is probably coming from the extra power. I have heard some 550's with the chip in them and I felt they were a bit harsh..I am not getting that with this 420. I think a lot of that comes from the rewiring and filter board change. The amp was quite noisy before...not in a good way. Dave was really pleased with the outcome of the mods and I was too. If I did not have 3 other heads, I would keep this one.

Thanx for the info. I do agree with the 550 being a bit harsh, thats exactly how I would describe it.
