Well, it sure is hard to describe tone using text, but I'll try. The sound of the BBE (tube version) is warm and thick. I really do like this preamp. I was keeping it (and the QSC) as a back up to my Kern preamp and QSC PLX3602 power amp, but with Christmas expenses and such, I just convinced myself to trust my other gear. I don't gig that much anyway, so not having a backup is okay with me, I guess. I remember when I bought my first BBE BMax-T. I was floored with the tone! I remember my keyboard player saying "wow" when he first heard it. I had that one for about three years, and then sold off almost all of my gear, including that preamp. I missed that tone, and so I bought another one, which is the one I currently have.
It has a built in compressor, and the BBE sonic maximizer as well. You can really get alot of different sounds out of this preamp. But for me, the main thing was that warm, gooey, thick tube tone. It is because of the high voltage circuit. That's the difference! That's why the Alembic and the Kern and the Avalon sound so good.....high voltage design.
The QSC PLX amps are, in my opinion, excellent. Pure, clean, and very reliable power in a lightweight package. It just amplifies whatever you give it without wincing. Top notch product in my opinion. For a rack setup, QSC PLX amps are the only ones I would ever use.
