This is an AH500X head w/ GP11 Mark V preamp, at the time (1984 I think) the top of Trace Elliot's line. A very powerful head, this thing has massive transformers that are heavy, and produce some of the thickest, most dense low end you will ever hear. Seriously, the lows on other amps I've ever tried (even my Aguilar DB750) sound slightly hollow and fake compared to this thing. Of course, it's heavy (63 pounds I think). Then again, it has that awesome Trace Elliot
blacklight. And for whatever reason, it smells great when the fan is running. This head is rated at 500 watts at 4 ohms bridged, or 2x250 watts in stereo, and like all old Trace Elliot heads, that is
very conservative, this thing is loud!
This amp has two independent power amps in it, which can be switched between dual mono, bi-amping, or stereo power amp (no preamp) operation. Bi-amping is almost useless IMO, as the crossover point is fixed at 250 Hz or something foolishly high like that. Dual mono is awesome if you have two cabs, because you can adjust how much power goes to each cabinet, very nice if your cabs are not identical.
The graphic eq is very powerful, and far from being limited to the cliched scooped digital sound associated with later TE equipment, you can get almost anything out of this amp. I have gotten warm fat old-school sounds using this amp, an Alembic Spoiler, and an SWR Goliath, believe it or not. Good times.
Everything works 100%, except: the two front-panel push-push switches for switching in the graphic eq and mid-cut preshape are worn inside, and have to be sharply flicked to work properly. This is a well-known problem with these switches, and can be replaced for under $20, but it will just recur. Instead, the included footswitch can reliably switch these two modes much more easily.
The cover is a bit old-looking, with a nick on the front top cover of the fabric (both pictured). Also the circular thingies on the top which can be used to stack multiple units are lacking much of the original foam they came with (pictured). Otherwise it's in good cosmetic shape.
Comes with a Trace Elliot pleather bag/cover (pictured), and the aforementioned footswitch for eq modes (pictured).
The amp itself is pretty much bullet-proof, but there is also a custom flight case by Star Cases if you want touring-level security.
