Hey TB, for sale here is a Trace Elliot VA-400 head, a BIG tube model that pre-dates the V-type. It has a Trace GP-12 solid state pre, another 12AX7 pre section, and a 6 x 6550 power section, with a knob on the back to select whether to use all or fewer tubes depending on the situation. It appears to be a 1991 model, based on the inspection stickers on the pots inside. It has the UV florescent bulb on the front that works, and illuminates the awesome green Trace livery. Until I saw this one, I'd never even heard of this model, it's a bit of a rare bird. The road case top shows some mild wear, but the face is in great shape and the amp is in perfect working order, tubes sound fine.
Also included are the two cabinets; a Trace 1048 on top, and a Trace cab with 1 15" and 1 12" on the bottom. I can't find a designation for that one. The speakers appear to be original, the surrounds are intact, and the tolex is in very good condition. Note that the bottom cabinet has some stains on the bottom--it looks like something that would come off with a Magic Eraser. Both cabs have a little rust on the handles, but it appears to only be surface rust. Some steel wool and Rustoleum and they'd look new.
I spent an afternoon putting it through its paces. While it is an all-tube head, it doesn't do 'dirt' the way a cranked SVT can. Neither is it the sterile, glassy sound you expect from modern solid state. Instead, it is somewhere in between the two; massive, round, fundamental, glorious tone.
I'm listing this amp for a friend, who inherited it from her father, a working bassist in Monterey, CA. Truth be told, I want to buy it from them, but I'm in the middle of buying a house (so I can have a workshop again and post more build threads
), so I regretfully have to pass. She wants it to go to a good home so I'm listing it here to help make that happen.
They would like $1200 for the head and cabs together, for pickup in Middletown, RI. ***UPDATE*** SOLD!
