FS Vintage Ampeg Skunkworks SVT-HD Bass Amp Head w/ Original GE 6550 Tubes

Up for grabs is a 1987 Ampeg SVT-HD all tube bass amplifier head (i.e. Skunkworks). In excellent condition. Only 500 were handmade in the United States by a 'skunkworks' team using original parts (including original transformers). These amps rarely come up for sale. In my opinion this is the epitome of the Ampeg SVT. I've had original early 70's SVT's and SVT-2's and I prefer the Skunkworks. Most people looking here probably already know the history and background, if you're interested and do not know the history do a google search or get the Ampeg book by Gregg Hopkins & Bill Moore. I've held onto this amplifer for over a decade and in that time it's only been in my studio as a back up to my other Skunkworks SVT head and never gigged (only gigged with the rackmounted SVT-2). I have two Skunkworks and I'm only selling this one since I don't use them enough/don't need two. Hoping the amp will find a good next home. Comes with the original tubes including 6 GE 6550 tubes (most people believe the GE6550 is the best 6550 ever made and NOS examples go for over $300 a pair, therefore 6 would be worth $1K alone). The printing on the tube is still very clear. Amp sounds great. If you are in Southern California/nearby you are welcome to pick up in person. Please e-mail/PM me if you are interested and I will provide more pictures and do all the due diligence you want to verify the amplifier. Thanks.

Nothing but respect but I have owned two of these and still own one. These come nothing close to the original SVT. I have a 72, 76 and a 78 and they all sound better but for under 2,000.00 a decent deal.

I guess we shouldn't generalize since component values and condition of amps/tubes vary quite a bit. I based my comment on an A/B test I did when I also owned an early 70's SVT. During band practice I swapped back and forth a couple times and noticed the skunkworks had a tighter/better defined bottom than my early 70's. There was also less extraneous noise not to mention I like the security of having a third prong on the power cord. Maybe the tubes were tired out on the older one. Take care.
Hey guys, all new pictures. I figured it would help to have some good pictures. I even took off the back panel for the first time to expose those beautiful GE6550's.
I also listed it as an old school auction on eBay but TB members are welcome to buy outright/deal with me directly through here if you prefer not to bid.
