Ampeg 1973 SVT head.

This head has some issues. When the volume is turned to 11-noon the signal cuts out and makes a loud humming noise. This happens sporadically. At lower volume it doesn't seem to do this. I'm assuming it is in the preamp section because I can put another preamp in the external amp input and the power section perfroms fine. (I have used a VT pedal and a V-4B trying this out) I haven't had it looked at by a tech or anyone because there are none locally (I'm very rural) and I'm not willing to spend $200 or so for shipping back and forth.

When I purchased it the fan was broke, so it has been removed. The rear panel has a hole in the grill (see pics) which was also there prior to me purchasing it. I have no idea how it happened. The molex 12-pin connector for the pre to power section has been modified and probably needs to be replaced. It may be the cause of the problem.

It's been recapped, has new tolex, new grill cloth and new corners. The faceplate is one of the cleanest I've seen; it looks really good. All tubes are GE (except for one JJ 12ax7 in the pre and another in the power). The 6550s are still fine as far as I can tell. A grounded plug has been added. 2 spare 12Bh7s and 6C4s are included. A TUKI cover is also included.

This may be a cheap and/or simple fix; I don't know. I've moved onto other amps/things and don't want to invest any more money and time. Perhaps someone out there can use it and has something they want to trade/sell. I'm open to most items, but no 5 or 6 string basses. I would be especially interested in Gibson Thunderbirds (non-studio) or other vintage-type basses, etc. But feel free to offer anything, I'm willing to haggle.

I've disclosed all I that I am knowledgable about the amp so therefore it will have to be traded/sold in AS-IS condition; especially considering possible shipping charges (because it is HEAVY). Shipping would be exactly what the cost is after calculation. I can try to answer any questions but I am FAR from having any knowledge about most electronic issues.

Local pickup would be fine, and I'm also willing to drive a little if necessary.

Asking $1,100 (OBO) or possible trade for whatever. I would hate to part this head out but the tubes, chassis, headbox and transformers are worth the effort if it ever comes to it . I'm losing quite a bit but that's the way it goes. But as I said I figure someone could bring it back to par.

Thanks for looking.

That is a beaut! What part of VA do you live in? My Dad was born in Emory and I have spent quite a bit of time around those parts. Good luck with the sale.

Still trying to contact my tech to see what a price range would be to go over it completely. Let you know ASAP!
