| FINAL BUMP Going eBay: ... a 1x15 SPEAKER CABINET and MATCHING 2-SPACE HEAD originally made for the Gibson GB440 bass amp ... It is in pretty good shape - no rips or tears in the Dramatic - and Original ORANGE TOLEX ... a couple small dings in the Wicker Speaker Cloth.
If you are a collector - this is the rare one. With several years of eBay watching I have seen only one other; it was complete with two cab's - one 4x10 and one 1x15 plus the Head and Amp - but they also wanted well over $1000 for the set.
If you're not a collector but just need a Very Cool Looking - and very well made - gigging rig - just add Amp and Speaker - I also have for sale a couple speakers that'll match this very well: the 4-ohm Eminence which inside when I got it, and a Very Boss 8-ohm EV15B - which is Superb in this box.
THE TOP HEAD IS INCLUDED TOO ... why would one break up this set? It will fit any 2-space rack mount - about 12" deep.
What you see is what you get. I've not found much about this cabinet - IT IS VERY WELL MADE, but is a rare bird indeed. When you see what Gibson wanted for it (original list was $849 - the tag is still on it), you will understand why: Gibson could not have sold that many of these.
BACKGROUND / FAMILY HISTORY
The Gibson amplifier was one of the series of products - the original Acoustic Amplifier design team, including SWR and Raven-Labs owner / founder Steve Rabe, Russ Allee and Duke Aguiar (freelance designer with customers including Eden), and finally Aspen Pittman (Founder of Groove Tubes) had a hand - starting with the A.M.P. (Amplified Music Products) models AMP BH-420 or BH-260. As the team split into different companies, the design was repackaged into the original SWR (Steve W. Rabe) amplifiers and the Eden World Tour amplifiers. Gibson evolved the design into the GB440 - ADDING this Cabinet (and a partnered 4x10) to offer a complete system - but only producing the product line for about 18 months prior to acquiring Trace Elliot at which point Gibson dropped the product (see note above about the expensive price). Dave Funk, who did Gibson's warranty work, purchased the remaining inventory and he rebranded it the Thunderfunk. Over time Dave made it his - improved it .. first making it more Hi-Fi then adding a switchable cooling fan (they run kind of hot), then increasing the power (among other tweaks). The new 750 model will set you back around $1,700.
All these amps are all very similar with only subtle differences between them. In terms of tone, and due to minor tweaks on the front one, the older ones sound thicker, the newer ones more hi-fi. There is some variation of features: the FX loops different, some have fixed limiting with variable enhance while others have variable limiting with fixed enhance. Other features, including the inputs, tone stack, power amp, etc, are fairly similar - because they have the same genetic pool.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? 'cause if you have a 2-rack AMP or SWR or Eden or Gibson or Thunderfunk amp needing a home ... THIS is the CABINET for YOU. It will mate well with anyone in the family. |
