I must be crazy to do this, but yet I know two things: GAS has always worked out in the end; If the awesome quality/tone to price ratio stays the same in this line, I should be able to get another one just in case.
Here is a link describing my initial impression of this bad boy:
TFB550B vs. UL502.....the winner???? Markbass SD800!!!!!
To put it simply, this head LOVES to be loud. I just got done playing in a basketball GYM (as in 'boomy as hell' acoustics) with a large PA, and it was clear and present in the mix out front and on stage. DISCLAIMER: I use a Sadowsky M5-24, which I'm convinced would sound amazing through a 100watt Crate amp. Thing is, with the ultra punch of this bass, and the added full range clarity of the Epi cab and Markbass head, the sound is....well.....too bright. If you play agressive fingerstyle, and love to be heard with every single note, this is totally your head. If you like to wrap around the mix with a low end pillow, while it can be EQ'ed with the SD800, that's not its natural suit.
So why am I getting rid of this head? Well, I have a hunch that, as I have consistenly gone back to Sadowsky basses everytime I venture out to something eles (MTD Ken Smith Modulus etc), I also seem to never be happy completely unless i'm using an Aguilar rig. I gigged for 2 1/2 years with a DB750 thru a GS410, and I literally never even LOOKED at other rigs. When I got the GS412, even more so! Eventually though, the weight became an issue, and I went to a thick sounding but light head (SD800) and a super light full range cab (Epi UL410). Well, I think that the 'Aguilar sound' that just has all the right stuff for what I do, is going to perfectly compliment what I do, and I can't wait to get it into my UL410!!!
Anyways, here's some pics as well!
