Completely blows an SVT away.

No seriously, I like the tone of both and have owned an SVT II (non-pro). I get as much Ampeg tone as I had with my SVT, with 1/2 the weight.

The Mesa 400 breaks up beautifully at a much more useable volume, for me, at gigs.

I think the the SVT wins in the low-mid department by a hair, but not much.

I think of this amp as being a Fender Bassman on steroids. (The tone section is derived from the classic "Fender" tone stack, but with more assertive voicing, a lot more grit and a generous power section.)

I appreciate the fact that it's not too bulky or heavy (I often schlep it up stairs w/ one hand) but it's built very solid.

The cleanest, most neutral-sounding head it is not. But on a loud gig, it's more fun than dynamitin' fish.

Bump for a really great amp.
