Sadowsky Outboard Preamp (old belt clip style)

Sign in to disble this ad
For sale is my backup Sadowsky Outboard Preamp, produced somewhere in the realm of 1997/98. These are the 'classic' Sadowsky pres, made in conjunction with Aguilar during this time period.

The preamp came to me with a noisy volume pot, and Roger was nice enough to send me a new one to replace it. A local tech who works at Moog Music here in Asheville replaced it for me and gave the unit a once-over (receipt included for proof), and it is good as new now. The only issue besides cosmetic imperfections (scratches, etc) is that one of the corner screws on the back is missing... it was that way when I bought it a year or two ago. This does not affect functionality at all. You may be able to find a screw to replace the missing one, but I had no luck doing so during the time I have owned this unit.

These belt-clip units are hard to find, so PM me if you are interested. Asking $130 plus $10 shipping via USPS Priority Mail. PayPal only, all sales final.

How do these compare to the newer outboards?

Honestly, I had one of the newer units and had issues with distortion. No matter how much or how little I EQ'ed it, no matter where the volume was (or if it was running off battery vs. AC power), it seemed like there was an inherent distortion somewhere in there that I couldn't get out when I played any bass hard through it. I had an original belt clip model for years that I bought in 1997 and then stupidly sold in '03 or '04. I finally tracked a couple down a year or so ago and was pleasantly surprised that they functioned as I remembered, and were much cleaner with no distortion compared to the new unit I had.

As for comparing the units, it's kind of apples & oranges in many ways. It's just a simple 3-knob setup on this one for bass/treble/volume, and it only has input/output jacks. No switches, no XLR out, etc. It's as close as you can get to the onboard pre unit without sticking it in your bass, for all intents and purposes. The preamps are still voiced the same as far as I know with regard to EQ curves, etc.

I love it... I just don't need 2 of these sitting around anymore, hence why I'm selling one.
