Honestly, I had one of the newer units and had issues with distortion. No matter how much or how little I EQ'ed it, no matter where the volume was (or if it was running off battery vs. AC power), it seemed like there was an inherent distortion somewhere in there that I couldn't get out when I played any bass hard through it. I had an original belt clip model for years that I bought in 1997 and then stupidly sold in '03 or '04. I finally tracked a couple down a year or so ago and was pleasantly surprised that they functioned as I remembered, and were much cleaner with no distortion compared to the new unit I had.
As for comparing the units, it's kind of apples & oranges in many ways. It's just a simple 3-knob setup on this one for bass/treble/volume, and it only has input/output jacks. No switches, no XLR out, etc. It's as close as you can get to the onboard pre unit without sticking it in your bass, for all intents and purposes. The preamps are still voiced the same as far as I know with regard to EQ curves, etc.
I love it... I just don't need 2 of these sitting around anymore, hence why I'm selling one.
