Thunderfunk 550(A) w/gold chip

Sign in to disble this ad
I've come to realize that I haven't played a gig without a pedal preamp in front of my thunderfunk for the past 8 or 9 months. Think it is time to recognize that the clean punchy thing isn't working for the acts I am playing in right now. In light of that, I am looking to sell my thunderfunk for funds to buy a new amp.

Thunderfunk 550A (made before the "B" series)
Sent it to Dave to have him do the gold chip upgrade. Has lived it's whole life in a two space Gator case. Might have a touch of rack rash on it, but I don't think it does. Have the rack ears and other assorted stuff that came with it new. All the same stats as the B series 550's (ie: 550 watts at 4 ohms).

$850 plus shipping. Jump on it before I realize that I can't live without that timbre knob.

Note: I also had another tech clean it up a tad recently (had a dirty pot) and he "cleaned" the gold paint that was on the gold chip not realizing that was supposed to be there. The serial number on the back has the gold dot that Dave uses to mark the upgraded ones, and I am sure that checking that serial number with Dave would verify the gold chip upgrade. Just don't want any surprises.

No, I think my tonal goals are migrating away from the clean punchy thing. I've been using a SABDDI or other such devices to tube up the sound on the gig lately. Seems like a waste of the inherent thunderfunk tone to slap something like that in front of it. Just getting into situations lately that call for a different flavor of amp.

Please note: there's a damned good chance I'll regret moving this thing. This is the business for anyone wanting an instantly perfect clean and punchy tone with a massive amount of EQ in case you want to dial in a different tone.

I am looking to go in the other direction. I have a Aguilar AG500 Dual Channel . It does the grit think REALLY well.
Any interest in a swap ?

The AG500 is really warm and creamy on top. It has a nice grind as well, and that's on my single channel version!

I am really aiming for a sale, but let me mull it over.

both great amps.......way different flavors. the ag500 is actually a pretty good choice (imho) given what the OP is looking for, tone-wise.

Played a loud gig with my upright last night with extremely wonky acoustics. My fishman pro plat eq wasn't enough to notch out the feedback. The semi parametric eq saved my ass. I am taking this off the market while I reconsider.
