Update - just received these in the mail - they are not gray bottom, and they don't have date codes. Just flat black on the bottom.

last update - have been assured these are original to a 73 P as solder joints were untouched.

Hmmm.... I don't know. Never saw a black bottom undated 1973 Fender pickup before. Also, those plastic covers appear to have been steel-wooled or ScotchBrited to scratch them up and look used. That wear looks very unnatural to me. One never knows I suppose....

Talk to that music store again. I have 73 and 74 p bass pickups and they are grey bottomed and stamped (or inked). Not trying to offend, just going out a a limb. I could not in good faith buy/sell that pair of pickups as such, BUT having said that, if they are indeed 73's they should be about double what you are asking........ :-)

Thanks for the input guys. I believe the wear to be genuine - the bass the pups were pulled out of belonged to Joe King of the Queers in favor of some hotter DiMarzios. With that punk rock pedigree, I can only imagine what the bass may have been subjected to!

UPDATE - A little hard to see in the pic, but I can say the pups are wired w/ deep burgundy wire, which is consistent w/ 70's pickups.
