72 Fender Fretless P neck w/ maple board

Sign in to disble this ad
1972 Fender Fretless P neck. One piece (other then the skunk stripe) so the fingerboard is unlined maple. It is a very cool neck, but it has some issues.

The good:
1) Actual 1972 Fender P fretless neck.
2) End of heel is stamped "5 JUN 72 B"
3) High gloss, one piece, with no fake fret lines
4) Because of #3, side dots are where they are supposed to be for a fretless neck.
5) Fingerboard shows some wear, but not too much.
6) Truss rod works fine.

The bad:
1) A few scuffs (chips in finish) where the wood is bare on fingerboard. (3 little ones on fingerboard around 7th - 9th position...see photos)
2) A large and a small scuff (chips in finish) where the wood is bare on back of neck...around 13th - 15th position (see photos)
3) Tuners are not original and do not line up with original screw holes on back of headstock. (see photos)
4) Scuff through to wood between E and A tuners on front of headstock (see photos)
5) Cigarette burn on front of headstock near E tuner (see phots)
6) Extra string tree hole on face of headstock (see photos)
7) Hairline crack from end of headstock through G tuner. This has been improperly repaired (from a luthier's standpoint) by putting three screws in the top edge of the headstock. It seems structurally very solid, but is an aesthetic mess. I think a luthier would take the screws out, make sure the crack was glued good, and refill the holes with maple dowels. (again, see photos)

This is a cool neck that could really finish off a project 1970's Fender P bass. I know it is not in the best condition, but I also know that it could be totally restored if the owner so desired, or, it would be functional as is, or, as I would do if I was going to use it, properly repair the crack. I do know that you don't see too many of these on the used market, and when you do they are often in the $500 range, or above. Considering the condition of this baby, I am asking $275 shipped.

Could you post a pic of the side markers? Do they line up with the frets positions or the usual place, in between fret positions?

Will post pic after work tonight....after 9pm.

Markers line up with where the frets should be, not in between the frets.

If this had frets, it would've been gone before you saw it! ;-)

I have been looking for one of these puppies for quite a while
I am mating it to a '78 P body, I just picked up - not the same year, but at least the same decade!
