Hey guys bought this along with the neck ,bought it without guts and was planning to install some active pups but never followed through,so hoping to sell this to someone who can use it more. Its an 80s MIJ PJ Special body in black, this one has more options in a body then u might think.
First off its routed through the back so you can easily stash a pre or something in there ,then it has the microtilt bolt still in the neck pocket instead of using a shim, lastly it doesn't have a guard which means no screw holes ,or you can easily slap a p guard on there.
The body is in somewhat rough shape with some major finish cracks near the input jack,as well as various dings, nicks and impressions throughout the rest of the body. Though it looks played ,none of the wear looks like it was intentionally abused, more like the previous owners rocked it long and hard. I can't really call myself a wood expert but the grain I'm seeing looks solid ,most likely alder if anything. I can include the neck plate, jack, toggle switch. The pictures speak for themselves, but I think this is a solid buy at 120 shipped con us. |

If so, I vaguely recall they were made of basswood.

MIJ from the mid-80's with an "E" serial #
My sources agree it's basswood

That was the Power Jazz Bass Special. Same wood, extra fret, graphite reinforcement in the neck, and different control layout to include the active electronics. Duff's was a straight-forward Jazz Bass Special with the V/V/T (actually a TBX), and the 3-way toggle just like yours.
The earliest ones had flat black finish on the back of the neck and headstock and most of those also have a chunkier, more Precision-style neck. Later the same model appeared with a clear finish on the back of the neck, and most of those have a more narrow Jazz-style neck.
