I am looking for pickup replacements for a 99' Yamaha TRB6-II. I have a Larrivee 6 string bass with a pair of EMG P-type active pickups and I love the sound of it, so I am looking for something in the same ballpark for the Yamaha. I am new to pickup switching but think I might like EMG's in the Yamaha bass. The measurements seem close, I believe the PU's are "soapbars." I know tone is subjective, but as a builder could you share your opinion of the tone qualities of the EMG's? My Yamaha has 5 controls also, volume, blend, and bass, mid and treble controls. Does the pickup set come with the same configuration of controls/preamp too? There may be a problem with my existing pickups/preamp, which is really why I am looking to swap them out (a weird distortion that seems to happen at high volumes or when I dig into the strings hard, but not so perceptible at lower volumes)
Thank You,
John Hall

First off - these pickups do not include any preamp or controls.
However, I would guess they could work with your Yamaha preamp. Their output is about normal, and the preamp should be
able to handle it.
However, I have no direct mix/match experience with the Yamaha wiring.
To my ears, EMGs are very controlled and 'clean' sounding.
I recommend running them at 18v, which IMHO improves the high end and gives them a 'wider' sound. It's not unlike a good example of a Fender pickup, but with some 'studio production'
(a little EQ, even a bit of compression) built right in to the pickup. Engineers seem to really like them.
Definitely double-check the dimensions on your Yamaha pickups.
Most TRBs I've seen have longer, narrower pickups.
The word 'soapbar' is generic to all rectangular pickups, and
doesn't imply that the actual dimensions are the same.
These pickups are 4.5" long and 1.5" wide.
Cheers,
Martin |

I need to take it to a tech guy and have it looked at. I like the EMG's in my other bass alot, but I should probably make sure whatever next step I take with this bass will actually fix the problem. |

Distortion is often the result of a failing battery.
Always worth checking. |
