Flipster Overdrive Pedal- Based on the pre of the Ampeg SB-12 Portaflex

Sign in to disble this ad
Sold Pending Payment

Hi-

You probably have read about this pedal here on Talkbass. Here is the biggest thread going on the pedal. The bottom line is that this pedal provides a very nice touch-sensitive overdrive similar to that of the tube pre in the fliptop Ampeg amps. It also offers tonal control via Bass and Treble knobs.

You can read many accounts of this pedal if you do a search with keyword "flipster". It is functionally and tonally similar to a sansamp VT bass. Some forum members prefer the Flipster. Uses a standard Boss-style 9V adaptor.

HERE is the manufacturer's website.

This pedal was built by a Talkbass Forum member to a very high standard of workmanship. Check out the photos. I just picked up a Mesa amp with a tube front end, so I'm moving the Flipster out to someone who can use it more than me.

My Price on this pedal is $110 shipped in the continental US. The price is firm. PM or post any questions. Check out my feedback. Bumps appreciated.

I'd like to give it a couple of days before shipping internationally.

I forgot to mention, PayPal accepted.

I'd be interested in comparing this to my Barber Linden. Is this a "hot" one or one of the more mild ones? (I gather from the threads that you can makes these either more suitable for crunch or just for warmth depending on how you put them together.)

I've had both... the Barber Linden Bass EQ doesn't do NEAR what the Flipster does.

Barber Linden Bass EQ
Honestly, when I plugged the Barber Linden in and stomped the switch the first time I was (for a lack of words) unimpressed. I expected 'more'. It does improve your sound, and it is 'musical' but IMHO it doesn't greatly nudge your sound toward vintage or tube, etc. It's a 3-band EQ with a Baxandal (sp) tone stack and it's effect is subtle. You can get the benefits of the 3-band and I'd planned to use it as an always on EQ, but ended up feeling that I didn't need it for what it was doing. So sold it. You can hear the difference that this pedal brings, but it's not obvious and blatant. It would be tough to really show the difference via sound clips A/B'ing this pedal. In my opinion.

Flipster Pedal
Definitely nudged or shoves your tone toward old school land. It does what it says and does it well. At the time I'd left the gig that I bought it for, so ended up selling it, but now I could definitely make use of it for a blues gig. The sound clips that are out there are very accurate in what this pedal does.

In my opinion these pedals are night and day in what they do. The Linden hints at it... the Flipster kicks.

Thanks stflbn.

The Flipster is sold pending payment. I'll lock the thread when sold.

Damn... I was just messaging to tell you "I'd" take it. I could use it for the blue's thing I'm doing now.

heh.

Hesitated... apparently I was to good of a salesperson. Damn me... I was curious what a Flipster into a Valvedrive would sound like, or better yet a Flipster into a ValveDrive into a VT-bass. :-0

The Barber is just two band (bass and treble), but it has two different settings for each of bass and treble. I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking to recreate an old Ampeg amp either--just to someone looking to recreate one little part of it (the EQ, Baxandall tone stack). I found the effect to be more significant than you did; with my passive basses, going into a Summit TD-100 and a Berg IP112, the Barber Linden "sweetened" things and opened up the whole sound (which really suprised me to hear--it made the TD-100 sound dull by itself, something I never would have thought). But again, this was the only element of tone-shaping in my signal chain and I may have perceived a greater effect because of it.

Ya, now that I think back it was 2-band. At that time I was also using 2 basses with 3-band OBP-3's in them so that could have effected my impression. Now I at least have 1 passive P-bass. I'm not quite the heretic I was at that point. :-)
