FS: Beautiful Tort Pickguard from a '72 Precision **TRADED**

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been parting this bass out (unfortunately) and I thought I was going to hang on to the pickguard to put on my new '73/'74 P bass. Since the thumb rest is in a different location, and the fit isn't quite right anyway, I've decided to sell the pickguard from the '72 P and get one custom made for my '73.

Anyway, to make a long story longer, I have for sale a beautiful vintage tort pickguard from a '72 Precision. Because of the year, it has the thumbrest holes on the G string side. I believe this should fit a '62-'72 Precision, so it's perfect for a restoration project.

Like many pickguards from this era, the tip by the input jack was broken off at one point, but repaired. Also, it does have a name and date written on the back (Rusty Cook, 2/24/87)...which I assume is a former owner. Rusty...are you out there? Other than those things, the guard is in terrific shape for being 38 years old.

I will take a pic of just the pickguard tonight, but I have included one that shows the pickguard when it was on the '72 Precision...isn't it a beauty?

Price is $150 shipped to the lower 48. Payment via PayPal or a USPS Money Order. If you want it shipped anywhere else, just send me a message for a shipping quote. PM me or shoot me an e-mail at peabody59@hotmail.com for any questions. Thanks!

They just don't make 'em like this any more.

I "like" some newer tortoise guards.

I "LOVE" the vintage ones though.

$200 is well below market value for this guard. Someone is gonna get a great deal.

One thing I have discovered over the years is that pickguards are picky things (no pun intended). While this should slip easily onto a '62-'72 Precision, it may or not fit a 200X Precision. When I tried to put it on my '73 P (which has the thumbrest on the E string side), there were a couple of holes that were off just a teeny bit off.

I did print out a picture of this guard and compared it against a picture of a body of a 2008 MIA Precision. The holes seem to line up where they are supposed to...but again, your guess is as good as mine.

Something to keep in mind is that this guard also has holes for a thumb rest and a pickup cover...but if you're looking to give your newer P a more vintage look, that shouldn't be a problem.

Just one last thought...to fit I'm almost sure it would have to be a MIA P. I don't think the hole patterns are exactly the same on a MIM or MIJ....but I could be wrong.

I'm not sure if I helped or not, but if I did....I do take PayPal .

Bump...

This beautiful pickguard is still available and awaiting your restoration project.

One thing I will add...if you happen to have a mid to late 70's tort P-bass guard (thumb rest will be on the E string side)...I may be interested in a trade.

Thanks!

I'd also consider a trade for a vintage tort Jazz guard from the same era.

I'll also consider reasonable offers (the key word is reasonable)....

Rock bottom price of $150 shipped...

You will not find a nicer vintage guard at this price.
