FS: Delano custom "JC 5 HE/D" soapbar pickup

Sign in to disble this ad
This pickup is essentially one "JC 5 HE/D" stacked-coil Jazz neck pickup inside a soapbar shell. Its dimensions are 4.25" by 1.25" (the same as the standard Bartolini "P2" shape) and it was manufactured by Delano as a custom order for me, using the same shell as their SBC 5 "driver" pickups.

This pickup is intended for the neck position, and has a bright, snappy, narrow-aperture Jazz pickup at its heart. It has an aggressive, hollow edge to its tone, with a refined fundamental, growly midrange, and crisp treble. It works alone or with other Delano pickups (marked with a circle icon on the Delano website) as well as most other brands of pickups. If you wanted to pair it with a good humbucker at the bridge, I would suggest Delano's "SBC 5 HE/S Driver" dual-coil (or quad-coil) neck pickup as a good match for tone and signal level.

My analysis suggests that this pickup contains five magnetized slugs or polepieces inside the shell. I have used magnetic paper and the pattern looks distinctive. Additionally, the polepieces appear to be arranged for a narrow string spacing, approx. 17mm at the bridge. However, it seemed to work fine on my basses (which have 19mm string spacing).

Due to the internal design and the strength of the magnetic field, I would not recommend mounting this pickup too close to the strings. You may want to lower the pickup and use a pre-amp in order to boost the signal.

I am the original owner, and this pickup has been gently used. I do not believe it has any scratches or other wear marks on the top surface. I ordered it a few months ago and briefly tested it in two of my basses. The tone was not quite what I was expecting to hear, so I would like to give it a new home. Pictures will be posted later tonight.

My asking price is $130 $120 $110 $100 which includes shipping and handling to anywhere within the United States via USPS Priority Mail. The original box and instructions will be included.

If you love the Jazz bass neck pickup tone, don't miss this opportunity to buy this rare, one-of-a-kind pickup!

Here are the pictures that I promised.

I just noticed that the provided instructions are for a "shielded 1-conductor cable" pickup, while this pickup is actually has a shielded 2-conductor cable. As you can see in the last image, the green and yellow wires are connected to the coils, while the bare wire connects to the shielding. This is different from most other Delano pickups that I have seen, which either have a single conductor with a shield or 4 conductors with a shield. This gives you the flexibility of using this pickup with a preamp that requires separate common and shield connections (such as Audere).

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
