I just want to know, is there some kind of material that needs to go on the headstock to secure these decals? Some kind of laminate or something?

First, clear coat and then apply decal, then several more clear coats.
Sand with 1000# wet/dry paper.
Reapply a few more coats of clear.
Sand with 1400# wet/dry.
Flood coat one last time with head dead-level and let it dry.
Wax and buff by hand.
Another example:::
Patience and wet/dry sandpaper.
