Hey all,
My trusty audio interface is now on the chopping block due to finances! I'll have to "tough" it out with my new IEMs, and forego my nice mixing with my active desktop monitors (until I can get a new audio interface).
PreSonus AudioBox USB - $110 shipped paypal.
It's about a year old. I have used to to drive my KRK monitors, as well as an interface to my DAW (Logic Express 9 and in the past, Garageband). The unit is spotless, save for some dust I'll wipe off before shipping. I did notice that a bit of the white painted-on dial surrounding the "Main" volume knob is sorta scratched off -- probably from my nail or something. Sorry I don't have a pic handy
Setup/integration into OS X (and all CoreServices and Garageband and Logic) is easy -- you don't have to do anything! If there were any drivers to download, OS X does it without asking, or it maybe asks and then it's done in a minute. I can't remember if I needed to download any drivers...
Also shows up on my Boot Camp partition, so it's PC-friendly too!
It nicely supports 24-bit/48 kHz. audio for better-than-CD quality recording. It's DAC of course passes that high of audio to your monitors or whatever, so that's nice for your better-than-CD-quality music.
What's nice about the AudioBox vs the FireBox is that the former has a "Mixer" knob, which allows one to adjust the master monitor mix from all mic inputs (your mic/instruments) to all "playback" (from the computer), to anywhere in between.
Also, the FireBox is FireWire-only, which is kind of going away these days with Apple's new proprietary ThunderBolt connections. FireWire 800 lovers can say what they want about how it's better than USB 2.0, but what's the point of having a better interface if it's obsolete in five years? That's just my take on it. Not a big selling point or anything, just something to think about if you were considering the FireBox.
