| | Registered User | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Sykesville, MD | | | Honestly, hard to say. I have a hard enough time reading TB descriptions of tone ("aggressive", "growly", "grind", etc) and comparing to what I actually hear when I play gear.
But here's the pickups I experimented with:
Basslines SMB-4D
Nordstrand MM4.2
G&L MFD pickup
...and they were all in the same tone family for sure as you might expect. In the end, I went with an original MusicMan Sterling pickup I found.
I own a Sterling and like the tone, and not surprisingly the Sterling pickup came closest to that.
Sorry, I know that's probably not much help... but I couldn't get a good feel for how these would sound beforehand either. That's why I bought the whole bunch of 'em to try out.
To my ears, and for my tone goals, the Sterling worked best followed by:
Nordstrand MM4.2 (even though it's alnico)
Basslines SMB-4D
G&L MFD.
I already sold the G&L, and will be posting the Nordie soon.
