The P and J-Bass pickups volume balance very well together. The control layout is the standard VVT. By turning the individual volume knobs you can blend different amounts of each sound. The J-Bass pickup is Hot (over wound) in comparison to the American Standard J. The split-coil P-Bass pickup, also Hot (over wound), maintains the vintage Precision tone- harmonically rich, solid and warm. The split-coil pickup is suitable for comparison to Fender’s ’62 Reissue split-coil. The body has resonance and sensitivity.

The Hot-Rod Precision (HRP) arrived at stores with the usual poor set-up due to regional climate changes and bumpy roads. After a good set-up everything is right. The neck is capable of handling super low action, frets level and dressed with special attention to the nut.

The HRP is a standard Precision bass with the option of a dose of Jazz on steroids. Since the introduction of the Jazz bass electric bass players have desired a bass that is a combination of the best parts of Leo Fender's Precision and Jazz bass. The Hot-Rodded Precision was introduced in 1999. It was FMIC's first successful attempt in the US apart from the Custom Shop to provide players a balanced volume between the passive P/J pickup configuration within a Precision body and neck. The Hot-Rod Precision does sound and feel superior to similar models MIM P-Deluxe series, MIJ Aerodyne and MIA/MIM California Special series. Fender hit another home-run with HRP unfortunate that it was discontinued in the fall of 2001.

Once largely unknown by Fender enthusiasts recent years have seen an increase in popularity and second hand values.
