Geddy Lee Body... paint halfway stripped.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all.. been a while since I posted anything here.

A while ago I got my hands on a Geddy Lee body with the intention of stripping the paint and building a new a bass from it. Well as you can see I didn't get very far before I realized that this is way too much work for me. I started stripping the paint with a heat-gun and stopped after about 10 minutes as I was about to choke from the fumes.

This is obviously for someone who is looking to finish what I started.

$90 shipped CONUS or $80 picked up (Northern VA)
Paypal is cool .

Thanks.

Can't you just coat the entire thing in aircraft paint remover stripper and just wait a little while to remove the paint/finish?

That should work just fine. Then use a putty knife to scrape it off and then sand it down when it's dry. Then it will need to be sealed again and then you can think about what you want it to look like.

The post by 4001 is spot on. If you can't find the aircraft stuff locally, I have also had success against Fender poly with something called 5F5 that I got at a hardware store. Forget about Stripeze or any of the "friendlier" stuff. You want something that stinks.
You have already broken the original coat, so the stripper should be able to get a good bite at this point.

First, be sure to do it outside, and use good gloves. Also, let the stripper do the work. Give the body a good coat and stick it in a heavy duty trash bag overnight. I prefer a plastic scraper instead of a putty knife in order to avoid dings as much as possible. If you don't get all of it, just do another coat of stripper, instead of trying to sand off the remaining spots. While you will of course have to sand it some, the less you sand the better, in order to avoid reshaping body contours. Or worse, getting divots from digging in too hard in any one place. So again, the stripper is your friend.

Be sure to use a good wash product afterwards to neutralize any trace of the stripper and you should be good to go.

I should add that last one I did, I was able to preserve the stampings inside the neck pocket by masking that area with good quality tape. Thinking that in this day of aftermarket or less-quality bodies, I wanted to be able to prove that I'd started with a genuine Fender product. So, masking the neck pocket before stripping might not be a bad idea.

It's a good thing we're talking about a bass here, because otherwise I might have to alert the proper authorities!

That reminds me of the time I went to a strip club for a bachelor party and had a few too many drinks. On the way home at about 3 in the a.m. we drive by this dog wandering around the middle of a 4 way/4 lane intersection. I figured it would be a good idea to see if it was friendly and bring it home so I could find the owner in the morning. It was a great dog and super friendly so she stayed at my house and we brought her to a veterinary hospital the next day to see if they could help us find the owner, which they did.

But this is how I told the story for the next couple weeks:

"I went to a strip club the other night and came home drunk, at 3:00 in the morning with some bi+ch I picked up on the way home"

"Are you serious!! What did your wife do when you showed up with her?!?!"

"Oh, she wasn't too happy but she said she could sleep on the bed between us".
