They are metal, and actually nice.
I bought Allparts knobs to fit the new pots (I needed 250K's for the DiMarzio and the SX's are not marked). These are as good as the Allparts ones for sure.

If you decide to buy them and don't like the knobs, no worries. I'l give you your money back. I'm not too worried about the $15.

How do you like the Dimarzio Split P? I'm thinking of getting one for my bass.

I need to be perfectly honest - I really can't say if it is the best I've heard, or if I am just saying I like it because I scored a great deal on it. I am not a tone snob by any means, and I liked the stock SX pickup. I also got a number of compliments on my tone with the SX with the stock pickup in it.
That said, I do like the Split-P, but I only know what I like. :-)

Edit: I like the sound. But...the tone knob does not have nearly the effect with this pickup as it did on the stock pickup. Per DiMarzio's instructions, I replaced the pots with 250K's and a .05mF cap, so there were 3 changes all at once - not sure which made the most difference. If the stock pots are 500K, then that's a huge difference just there.
Long story short - the stock pickups sound just fine, and the Split-P sounds fine as well.
