Hey all,
I bought this neck from Warmoth a couple months back, and it's really fantastic. But alas, the GAS has struck again, and I'm itching to go vintage on my P. And Goncalo Alves sure ain't vintage.
The neck is a J profile, shaped to resemble early 60's Jazz necks according to their website. 21 medium-jumbo frets, perfectly dressed, filed and polished. I installed some standard Fender-ish tuners (not included), but I can leave the ferrules in, if you'd like (they're a pain to get in and a pain to get out, so I could save you some hassle). I also had them install a white corian nut, which was set up beautifully, as is everything else on the neck.
It came straight as an arrow, and hasn't budged since I got it (despite some crazy, crazy temperature and weather fluctuations we've been having where I live ).
I just can't say enough good things about this neck - I had pretty high expectations, being my first purchase from Warmoth, but they delivered (and then some). I don't notice it to be especially heavy; with tuners installed, it feels about the same as a maple/rosewood (with tuners) neck I have lying around. When it was installed on my P, it didn't feel any heavier than it had when I had the previous neck on - it still weighed in under 9 lbs. So if weight is a concern, I wouldn't be concerned, but then maybe I'm just not too picky...
With the nut installed and everything, the neck cost me somewhere in the $420-430 range, so I'd like to get $210 Shipped CONUS.In need of cash right now, so I'm gonna say strictly cash deals.

It should also be noted that being Goncalo Alves, it doesn't need a finish - it's covered by Warmoth's warantee without one. Hence, it doesn't have one. And it feels so slick and fine

What is the fingerboard wood? | It's Goncalo Alves as well, although with a more straight grained, rosewood-ish appearance. Almost looks like the fingerboard is quartersawn and the neck is flatsawn, although I'm not sure. Both sides are beautiful and striking, especially the back, IMO

They don't use it for Fingerboards...

At any rate, I'm more than a few clams short of this BEAUTY neck. The one I had was topped with Ebony. It played amazing, with the unfinished neck, and warm tones!

It's Goncalo Alves, unless what the showcase told me wasn't true
From what I can tell, they'll occasionally do limited runs of combos that they don't ordinarily do, i.e. Goncalo Alves/Goncalo Alves. There are still a few up in the showcase when last I looked, but IMO they aren't as striking as this one, and man oh MAN are they expensive.
The way I justified it to myself, though, was that getting a maple neck and having them finish it would have cost almost the same...so I guess that makes it worth it

I actually have a Warmoth with a Goncalo fingerboard, so yes, they do occasionally use it as a fingerboard wood.
They told me that its not usually able to be used as a fingerboard, so only a couple of pieces have what it takes.
Free bump for a gorgeous neck. |
