| Wanted: Rev Solo II I got an old RS-I in a trade bundle recently (thanks Francois). Finally got round to trying it out yesterday.... crikey, I think I'm very excited by the sound.
It is stupidly sensitive ... which way up, position etc can change the sound massively from dry bassy whump to amazingly crisp and clear well-defined mid-range. The click can sound too lively, but using the compressor on the ProPlat I flattened that out easily. And there's some sort of earthing buzz if you don't get it in the slot properly ... and a loose connection in my phono/jack converter I think...)
With the pickup pulled slightly out of the slot (not central) I found the tone became much more 'airy' and 'woody' ... lots of that tricky mid range that makes the bass cut through the mix with hardness, rather than disappearing as a soft treacly whump - but not so much that it sounds nasal and metallic. And a lot more finger noise and click than other pick ups ... I think thats probably a good thing, though I'll have to try it in live situation.
I'm aware it's sensitive, the fit changes with temp/humidity, and some people have struggled with feedback ... but I reckon with ProPlat and foam baffles in f-holes I can deal with that.
It's surprisingly different in character from all the others I've tried (Underwood, Bassmax, Planet, Shadow, Schatten ... not TM yet(!)), which sound more or less the same. I still think the Underwood is the simplest and most reliable (doesn't care how you fit it, response always stays the same, only down-side is that it can disappear as a soft whump in the mix).
So I'm on the lookout ... anyone got one to trade or sell?
