Mute use on horizontal

I let Lee know that placing a mute on the *neck* side of the *bridge* pickup (a jazz-style pickup on a horizontal fretless) renders a completely accurate doghouse sound. Very little sustain, and needs some EQ, but amazingly authentic.

I don't know is this will work on an actual Barker Bass since I am not yet an owner, but maybe someone will find this suggestion useful.

Followup question for you Mike:

I curious where you're plucking when you have the mute in that position. And is it the narrower (Alpha) mute or the Beta?

Ok, I fudged, I slipped in two questions. I'll go back to Go and not collect my $200 Canadian.

Kindly,

Lee

Anywhere from about two to three inches past the end of the fingerboard to the same distance over the fingerboard, i.e. towards the nut. The varation has mainly to to with selecting the string tension that feels right.

I use either mute, with the beta giving an extemely fast decay. I tried both together but that was a bit of overkill for this purpose.
