AES/RMS POWER

Hi, without going into too much technical jargon if a speaker is rated at 100 watts AES is it the equivalent of 70 watts RMS ? also i used to own an Hartke AH500 amp and if i can recall the power ratings in the manual neither specified the amps power rating in AES or RMS which i find missleading,
any help appreciated regards Lenny

Hi Lenny, I'm not sure I will be much help here as RMS vs. AES power ratings seem to be a widely disputed/misunderstood and confusing topic... That being said, I'm not even close to 100% certain of the facts surrounding RMS and AES standard power ratings...

I have read that AES power ratings are higher than RMS in some cases, but I'm not sure what the formula is to find that exact number, and honestly, because manufacturers don't seem to have a 100% consistent standard for test frequencies and such, one rating from manufacturer A may be different than another rating from manufacturer B.

There is also peak output and mean output to confuse the matter. RMS does indeed stand for Root Mean Square, so that would seem to me to be more of an average power rating...

For these reasons among others, personally I prefer to match my amps and cabs from the same manufacturer. I can be pretty confident that Epifani heads will play nicely with their cabs...and so on.

Keep in mind too when choosing an amp or speaker that you can power a lower rated cab with a higher rated amp or vice versa and not blow up either...you just have to make sure you don't push either component beyond their limits.

If you notice excessive heat or distortion, you are probably at or beyond acceptable limits.

As far as Hartke goes, we are not a dealer for them so I really can't help you there.

This post probably just confuses the issue more, and exposes my ignorance to the technical aspects of power ratings, but hopefully it can be a starting point for your research.

Peace and good luck!

JB
