| Buy a "cheap" five string Squire (P or J) and replace the pickups with Bartolinis as well as the electronics. Under $500 and you'll have the best bass you can get your hands on for country.
If I was still playing with the country band I was with, I'd have done that already. We gigged four to five days a week (in addition to working a full time job) so the $$ was great. Even though I could afford anything high end, I would do that since it got transported all over the place, and country gigs are notorious for inebriated fans that don't care if your bass gets knocked over when you're on a break.
Brandt can hook you up with the Squire, the pickups and the electronics, I'm sure!
