Country bass player wantabee

Have a eden nemises 410 bass amp and have an 1980ish ibanez bass guitar. Am primarily a blues guitar player but am in a country band. I need a better bass guitar to get a lower growl sound when just using the Pa without the amp direct. Any sugestion for a cheap bass?

Depending on your budget and what you call “cheap” there are several ways you can go. Playing country you can never go wrong with a Fender Jazz style instrument. (Squier Jazz basses start at $179.00, Mex. Made fenders start at $449.00 and they go up from there.) A passive Jazz bass will offer a fair amount of growl and allow your front of house engineer to EQ and effect your bass tone exactly to his liking. (Sound guys are control freaks and most really dig a clean passive signal.) If you think that you may need a little more versatility on stage I would look at the Warwick RockBass line and the Lakland Skyline series. Both basses offer active electronics packages with great versatility and low end presence, plus the ability to adjust your EQ on the instrument may come in handy.

For the money you can't beat the Fender Highway 1 P basses. Check em' out they're great sounding well built solid work horse basses.

+1 on the Highway 1! P or Jazz, the H1 series is a quality instrument with the heart of the classics and the benefit of modern technology at a reasonable price!

I second that! My main gigging axe is a Hwy 1 P-Bass! and it smokes!!

Buy a "cheap" five string Squire (P or J) and replace the pickups with Bartolinis as well as the electronics. Under $500 and you'll have the best bass you can get your hands on for country.

If I was still playing with the country band I was with, I'd have done that already. We gigged four to five days a week (in addition to working a full time job) so the $$ was great. Even though I could afford anything high end, I would do that since it got transported all over the place, and country gigs are notorious for inebriated fans that don't care if your bass gets knocked over when you're on a break.

Brandt can hook you up with the Squire, the pickups and the electronics, I'm sure!
