I'd say get both. They both sit in the music so well. I suppose the argument is based on the classic sounds of both instruments without mods or pups that emulate the classic sounds of both. To get that heavy thump the P bass is better. The jazz for more of the growls mid presence and versatility. For slap P bass will give you more of a woody tone which was and still is a great sound. The jazz gives you a snappier quicker attack with more tone variations. So many artists use either one for a reason. When you play it in the store it does not sound like the best bass in the world when compared with boutique basses. However, when played within the context of music the tone of both these instruments have set the bar forever. I love both and can't make my mind up. If I could only have one it would be a jazz for versatility

Well, the sound of Fender basses are unique, I love Jazz basses and P basses, however, I got thrilled when I bought my WarWick Corvette Basic 5, it just blew up my fenders, it's like a Fender Jazz Bass on steroids and a P bass tuned up. It covers both sounds with such an accuracy, I love it. + the extra high cut, which is only from Warwick basses. I am a Fender lover, but WarWick basses just have something else..
