Talking 100+ yr. old Violin.....or 1/.01 size DB

Sign in to disble this ad
This is the add I have posted here locally. The "Oscar" refered to is the main stringed instrument guy in town. Owner of
"Oscar Carrescia's Violin House":

This violin had belonged to my Grandfather (1907-1978) and to his older brother before his birth.

In the 1918 photo (the newspaper article is from 1966) below, my Grandfather is the one sitting.
The violin he is holding in the pic is THIS violin.

I had forgoten about this until it was re-given to me after my Mother's recent passing. It's been sitting,
untouched, in it's case for 30+ years.

Although I know from family history it's at least 102 years old, Oscar thinks it may be as much as 150.

Upon further inspection some work may have been done at some point (we don't know) because the grain
of the wood on the top (although still quality) does not quite match the first rate grain on the back and sides.
After a proper set up by Oscar (new, quality strings and radiused, new French bridge, cleaning/conditioning
of the tuning pegs, etc.) the violin plays and sounds beautiful and loud! Oscar remarked that he would like it
for himself, but for right now, it's for sale.

Also comes with a very good (may be as old) quality bow and (also, may be as old) case.

This is a high quality, vintage, player's piece.
$2500 (This price was set by Oscar himself) O.B.O.

The pix below were taken before the setup. More (and/or post setup) pix upon request.

Would consider full or partial trades towards Spector basses (nothing lower than Euros), a Messenger (or similar) EUB, or (if local) a DB.

Thanks

Sorry..I have to ask, why on earth would you sell this great piece of family history? You don't need the cash as you are looking to trade for a 2500 bass?
man keep this in the family and get a new squire!!

as for why the grain on the top doesn't match the grain on the sides and back.......it's because the top is most likely made from spruce, and the back and sides made from flame maple. very common in every level of violin/viola/cello/and db.

You're nuts. If I had anything music related from my ancestors, it would take a hell of a lot more than 2500 for me to part with it. I've never understood the need to sell these heirlooms. Keep it.

Because my kids have no interest in it. I'll never play it. No one else in the extended family is musically inclined. It's been sitting in it's case, in a closet for the last 30+ years. Until my Grandfather's passing (1978) I had never seen it, so who knows how long it was stored, unplayed, before that?!

If it's really that good of a piece I'd rather see it in the hands of someone who will appreciate it rather than sit and rot in it's case until I kick the bucket.

When I took this to Oscar I knew it was old, but didn't know if it was a good, great or piece of junk instrument. I'm not really looking for a $2500 dollar bass. That's just the price (given the current economy) Oscar said we should ask.

Thanks. I've kind of started to notice that as I've researched and looked at others. I may have missunderstood Oscar's comments on this as he has a very heavy Italian accent.

I don't readily see one. I don't have the little mirror to look around inside. I do seem to remember (as a kid) my Grandmother saying something about it possibly being removed by someone who may have done some work on it. This was so many years ago I'm not sure I'm remembering correctly. According to Oscar it's a very good quality Stradivarious copy of the period.
