I'm listing for sale my Miraphone 187 BBb. I've owned this horn for 4 years now, and I just don't play it anymore, as my musical direction has changed significantly since I first started playing. I feel that it's time to allow it to move on, and serve another tubist as well as it has served me.
This horn was purchased used from Roger Lewis/WWBW in the spring of 2003. It's not exactly your garden-variety 187, as it's constructed of gold brass, and has a trigger on the #1 valve slide to aid intonation. The tone is somewhat warmer than your typical 187, as would be expected due to the metals used, and the intonation is quite good overall-nothing is in this horn that can't be brought back in tune with a little lipping/use of the trigger. The horn plays a little more open than a typical 186, with a good pedal register, and an open "cash" and high register. Potential buyers are welcome to audition the horn at my home.
This tuba's been through quite a lot with me-I used it throughout my HS career, and it's a 3-year veteran of the Indiana University Summer Music Clinic and a 1-year veteran of the Ohio All-State Band. The condition is quite good overall, and the finish is at about 97%-there's some moderate scratching on the back of the bottom bow, and some light swirling in the bell as a result of an (excellent) dent repair. There's also some plating missing from the edges of the 1st and 2nd valve paddles. There are currently some small dings in the bell rim at the moment, but these will be repaired before the sale, and the horn will be chem-cleaned as well. Otherwise, damage to the horn is limited to a couple of scattered small dings on the back right of the top bow. Considering that this horn is between 7 and 10 years old, it's in very good condition.
I don't have the horn at hand right now, but I will be home from college this time next week, and will have photos available then.
Horn comes with an uninstalled longer slide and tubes for the first valve, and the Winter/Miraphone hardcase (wheels don't work, but case is otherwise functional). The horn will not come with a mouthpiece.
Also available are a H&B Symphonic aluminum tuba mute (small size-will NOT fit this horn), barely used, with the included mute corks, and a K&M tuba stand.
Asking prices:
Tuba/case-$4800 SHIPPED VIA DHL
Mute-$100
Stand-$75
Thanks for looking!
Please direct questions about the horn to ck299906(at)ohio(dot)edu.
