Hello!
I'm new here, and not sure if it's ok to ask questions about this..my husband has taken up bass, and I'm starting to gather information about 5 string basses, maybe thinking birthday gift. Do you have any pearls of wisdom? I was looking at a few Ibanez...
Thanks
Ima

Hi Ima,

Hope you had a Merry Christmas!!

The Ibanez basses are dandy for the money. I don't think you can go too wrong....

Personally, I'm a ZON endorser....but they're A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE. If you're interested in a top shelf instrument, let me know and we can take it from there....Cool?? Cool.

If not, then the Ibanez or Yamaha basses would be good choices IMHO.

Happy New Year!!

Take him to as many music stores as you can find and let him doodle. He will let you know what he likes. For the money you will lay out, you want him to pick. Kinda like letting him go buy you clothing........doesn't work. My opinion only.

Find out whether he wants wide string spacing or narrow string spacing. Narrow: Ibanez Sr series... or wider: Ibanez BTB series. If its in your price range, make sure you get a model that's stock with Bartolini pickups.

I'm thinking it's very cool that you're buying him a bass for a birthday present! I mean, not every SO is that considerate.

I happen to be fortunate in that regard, too! Just sayin'...not every bassist is that lucky, y'know?

+1 If you want to make sure you get something he will play it would be better for him to try some out and see what he likes. Us bass players are fickle about equipment. Great wife though!!!
