A couple questions about the six-string

Sign in to disble this ad
First of all, I am very interested in the melodic capabilities of the bass. Thats why I 've been thinking about becoming a six-stringer. But, I still have to play basslines, as I play on the worship team at church. Would this be relatively easy to learn for a former guitarist? And what about a 4 string bassist?
Would it be a good idea to play?
Thanks a lot,

Hey Bassclef. I'm sure you wanted Todd to answer you but looks like he's out of action for a bit so I'll offer my opinion... I think many people approach the 6 string bass from the assumption that its somehow more difficult than a 4 or 5 string, and that you have to employ wierd techniques to be able to play it (almost as though its a totally different instrument). Truth is, its just a normal 4 string bass with a low B string (like a 5), and then a high C string... So, as you can see, its a 4 string bass with some added capabilities. You can still play 'normal' bass on it no problems. All you'd have to get used to is the string spacing is narrower than on a 4 or 5, and then get into learning to use the extended range to take advantage of the melodic possibilities it presents. By changing the way you think about it, you'll make the process MUCH easier for yourself.
