Help on selecting a 6-string

Sign in to disble this ad
i am going to be a incoming college freshman for music education, i am a bassist (Both Upright and Electric). I have been using a Shector Studio 5-string since 6th grade and now am graduating high school. I use to run my 5-string with a low B, but this past year I have been running it as a tenor bass. I mainly perform on electric, upright is my weaker of the two. I love having the tenor bass but having a 'lower end' was nice. I am not to much into slap and pop, i like to consider myself a jazz bassist. I am a huge Jaco and Vic (much like anyone else), I actually performed more love for my audition, for the music program. I am a huge fan of Jaco and love a fretless sound much like the upright, i plan on running both a electrics so i am not worried about losing the slap and pop you have with a fretted. i love the bass extremes too and Steve bailey is amazing with his fretless. So i am wondering what would be the best in 6-string and fretless, I collected enough in scholarships to actually purchase new equipment, so I am very excited. I am hoping you can help me, i hope i supplied the right type of information. i am not to sure what to include so that you could offer me some sort of advice or point me in the right direction.

A fretless TL-6 if you can find one. A soloist's dream. Neck is yhin, flat, wide, ebony fretboard, and reinforced with steel and graphite rods. Neckthrough too, very versatile electronics. Don't let the double Precision style pick ups scare you, this thing can really sing. For the 1991 version, standard is stacked bass and treble, volume, pick up blend, and stacked sweepable mid.

I'd shoot Mike Tobias (MTD basses) your original post.....He's a busy man but, he's the man to talk to.... and I heard he's very "user friendly"....
Rumor has it he's coming out with a jazz bass, hope it's comes in a 6er also. (if you find out anything about the new jb....keep us posted....lol)
the best to you

Hi Watsontenorbass,

Thanks for the note.....

6 string fretless?? Hmmm......

To be perfectly honest with you I'd recommend a fretted 6 string....but since it sounds like you have your heart and ears set on fretless....

I'll recommend a ZON TJ-6 Fretless......I think they're the best basses going....that's why I endorse them....NOW....that's what "I" would do...but as you (and everyone else) knows....there are a plethora of excellent instruments on the market these days.

Try as many as you can and see what YOU like the best and go get as much bass as you can afford.

I hope this helps.
