This can be a real dilemma for bassists.

Even with a low B string on your bass, there will often be bass clef notes too low for you to play, and the piano "bass lines" are in the wrong octave and not usually appropriate for bass, anyway.
An alternative is to follow the guitar chord symbols above the top staff, but those are often misleading, too. And then there is the occasional notated unison line or kicks which must be played as written back down there in the bass clef!
If I have a chance to check out the music in advance, I will often use circles or arrows to highlight important bass clef figures, and then rely on the chord symbols the rest of the time.
