Walking over two chords in a bar.

Hey Todd,

@samhallam from twitter here.

I've been walking through a few of the standards suggested on your DVD but i'm having trouble when I come across bars that contain two chords, for example bar number 10 of Stella by starlight, contains an Em7b5 an A7b9, I noticed in your bassline you land on the C# on the A7b9. A chord tone, then with bar 11 (Bbmin7, Eb7) you land on the root of the Eb.

Would I be safe to assume that in such a situation it's a good idea to try to land on a chord tone for the second chord, and not necessarily always the root?

Thanks so much for your help.

Sam

Hi Sam!!

Cool....Hey, don't assume too much. For now, I'd really recommend playing the root of the chord on the downbeat. That is ALWAYS a good and safe thing to play....ALWAYS!! I'm not sure what I played there....but I probably accidentally broke one of my "so called rules".....I tried VERY hard not to do that, but I probably did.

"When in doubt, play the root!!"

That will serve you well.......

Once we establish and master these "rules/suggestions" then we can start making some different choices.....Cool?? Cool..

Good to see your hard work and diligence my friend.

See you on Twitter!!!
