Laborie's baroque bass

Hello,

My baroque bass made by french luthier Christian Laborie in 2009 is for sale.

Viola da gamba shape, fingerboard in flamed maple, flat back, the four gut strings are from string maker Nicholas Baldock, the head is carved after a model from Nicolas Bertrand, string length of 41', and gut frets. It also has a second endpin hole for the Rabbath/Laborie wood endpin.

The instrument is healthy and is regularly played with different tunings (fourth, fifth and fourth with a low c or fifth with a high E).

The bass has a very nice open sound, precise and clear, which works perfectly in small groups. As for larger ensembles, it is better to use it with a different bow such as the Dragonetti shape

Price is 13000$, including a Mooradian bag and a baroque bass/violone bow from André Alègre.

The bass is based in Paris/Bruxelles, and i can send it overseas provided that you send me a flight-case.

wow that sure is pretty. aside from the fingerboard wood, what makes this a "baroque" bass? could be be set up like a "regular" bass too?

In principle you could string it with metal strings (assuming this is "regular" for you) but what makes it baroque is that :

- The angle of the neck is less pronounced which makes it optimal for gut strings as they need less tension.
- The bass was conceived and is currently set up for a 415hz tuning (typical baroque tuning).

Personally, I will advice not to change the initial purpose of the bass, and metal strings might damage the maple fingerboard.
