New Standard LaScala Hybrid - SOLD!

Not sure if I am making the right decision, but I am going to sell my Lascala. I'm not gigging regurlarly anymore, and probably won't for a couple more years.

Anyway, it's about 5 years old. It's the flatback version. It has a few scratches, very minor stuff - like the edges losing a little varnish from laying on the side. The bridge wing is sanded to fit a Revolution Solo, which I will include.

$5k for local pickup in Orlando FL. If you want it shipped somewhere, we'll have to discuss the details.

The bass has Belcantos on because I've been trying to shed more with the bow. It would not be my first choice for a jazz string. The clip is about 40 seconds of jazz and 20 seconds of arco. I do not usually play arco, so be gentle...

I shoot for a dry, organic sound. Obviously you can get more growly and less dark with Sprios or whatever. If a lot of people would prefer to hear it that way, I'll consider re-stringing it and making more clips.

One more note. When I first got the bass, I wanted really low string height (I was gigging a lot and I started having tendon issues). I had a local Luthier shave off a little wood around the threads of the adjusters. You can get the strings from very low up to about normal string height. Higher than normal height takes the adjusters out a little too far. If you like it really high, you will probably have to add some wood to the bridge feet. If you like it low, this is your bass.

I regret that change, as I now prefer the strings higher than average and I'm past my tendon issues for now. I may consider a price concession to help cover that change if it's an issue. It's really no big deal. I set the strings the same height as my Cleveland and adjusters are almost in the same spot. It was very little wood shaved off. I just want to provide 100% info about the bass.

Edit:
I just added a second clip of the bass close-mic'd with a DPA 4099. This clip sounds more like what the bass sounds like when you are playing it.

The sound is very direct and focused.

I put on Superflexibles that I had laying around so you can hear something closer to a Spirocore sound from it.

Lots of PM's and such, but no deals yet. Great bass. Needs a good home.

How was the first clip (Lascala Clip.mp3) recorded, please?
Is that from the built-in mics of a digital recorder?
Sounds a little more old school than the close mic-ing w/ 4099.

Thanks.

That was a Crown SASS into an Edirol R44. Mic was about 5 feet in front of the bass, but the room is not a good room to record in. The "old school" sound is probably due to the Belcantos. They don't have a modern pizz sound to my ear.

I don't think I really captured the bass well with these recordings - I was kind of rushing through the process. I might spend some time getting better ones. The bass actually records very well. The direct-ness of the sound sits well in the mix without being too boomy. You can record close to the bass and get a good sound, so live recordings are easier. In comparison, my Cleveland cannot be as close mic'd without getting more boomy resonances.

Hi Larry, you sound great!

I am moving from Australia to NYC in 5 weeks, The bass you are selling is the kind of thing I will be looking for in early December when I get there.
Please keep me updated as to the status of this bass.

Thank you.

Hi Kevin, I had not checked in in a while and didn't see your post until now.

Yes, I have a Cleveland. Different sound. There are things I love about both basses, and I would keep both if I could justify it. If I was recording a lot or played a lot of arco, I'd keep the Lascala. The Cleveland is a great gigging bass. As great as it sounds, it reminds you that it is plywood once in a while. The Lascala sounds like the carved top that it is. It records better and bows better, no question. The Cleveland amplifies better (at least with my setup - others may feel the Lascala amplifies better) and sounds a little more meaty in a group setting (for my taste, anyway).

Had some interest in the bass, but no one close enough to Florida to make it happen yet. Can't believe I still have it.

So...

How about $4500. Come on folks. This is a steal. If I don't sell it soon, I will probably take it somewhere to consign it and the price will go back up to offset that cost.

I compared the bridge to my Cleveland. The slight modification I had done is not noticable. With the strings at the same height, there is about the same amount of thread showing on both basses, so that is a non-issue. Get a Lascala at about $2k less than a new one.

I may consider trades involving things that say Walter Woods on them. Or really nice microphones.

I'm very interested in this bass. I live in Texas which I realize is not ideal, but paying shipping is no problem...4.5 K plus shipping is an amazing deal...if that doesn't work out then I'm willing to fly out and get the bass (yes I'm that serious) Please message me if you still have the bass...

Now that the bass is on ebay, will have to lock this in accordance with the classified rules. Good luck with your sale!
