What I say :
The EUB is a very cool looking, free-standing 4 string instrument. With both piezo and magnetic pickups it can cover the sound area normally occupied by double bass and/or fretless electric. In combination with the long –scale, mixing the two pickups gives a groovy sound all of its own.
The fact that the instrument is free standing means that it is ideal for instrument doublers as you can just walk up and play.
I have used the instrument in many situations;
• Anywhere a conventional electric bass is used – with added visual impact
• Instead of a double bass – particularly where space, transport, carry in or acoustic feedback might be a problem
• In latin music where the Electric Upright Bass is very widely used
• In art music / sound installations where its wide sound range and looks make it a show stopper
The solid body is 124cm long by 15cm at the widest point. The timber is in a dark sunburst with a light tiger striping effect. The string scale is 38” / 97cm. Strings are secured at the nut by an allen key system. Strings are secured at the body end to a Steinburger style tuner – strings are tuned from here using a knurled nut.
The fingerboard is black ebony with dot markers on the side (of course, the instrument itself has no frets). There is a bar style magnetic pickup and a piezo pickup built into the bridge.
At the base of the instruments is the sleeve that slips onto the stand and locks. There is a locking cord socket for the jack lead. Controls are on the side and are volume, tone and mix between magnetic and piezo pickups. Electronics are active and powered by an internal 9v battery which is activated when plugged in – this lasts a very long time.
The stand has a drum support style, 3-legged metal folding out base. This is attached to a Universal joint and spike for the instrument. This allows you to have the instrument at any height and angle that you prefer.
What condition is it in?
This instrument has been used both for gigging and recording – but I am very careful with my instruments. The instrument is in “as new” condition except for a 1cm scratch on the side.
Accessories
This instrument comes with a padded gig bag – the original that came with the instrument and it is rather nice. It has a bow pocket. The straps can be configured either for over-the-shoulder style or rucksack – so you can even ride a bike to the gig.
