Wm. Lewis and Son "Bottesini" Fully Carved Roundback $9500
William Lewis and Son "Bottesini". Late 50s. Asking $9500 - price negotiable.
I am offering my fully carved German upright bass for sale for $9500. This 3/4 size bass is the top of the line model from William Lewis and Son, and was made in the late 50s. It's a D neck bass with a string length of 42". I am the second owner of this great bass. The previous owner had three inlay dots installed in the left side of the neck at the minor 3rd, fifth, and octave, which can be used or ignored. The previous owner used it solely for orchestral music, while I primarily use it for jazz.
Two years ago I took the bass to Don Robertson's shop in Albuquerque, and had a overhaul of the instrument. They installed a new straight endpin as well as a new slot for a Laborie endpin (included), redressed the fingerboard, put in a new soundpost and a Kevlar tailpiece cable, and otherwise set it up beautifully. The bass was average before I took it to Robertson's, but I was blown away when they were finished with it, as was everyone who had heard the bass prior to the trip to Robertson's.
I'm CONSTANTLY being complimented on the sound this bass creates. It isn't boomy or muddy at all, but is still very bold and defined. It has quick response throughout the instrument, and especially sings in the mid-high range.
I recently took the bass to Sal Giardina in New Orleans for a check up, and he said that it's "a great bass, a tank, and in amazing condition". He also put on a new bridge a few years prior to my trip to Don Robertson.
