Hi Everybody,

My name is Chris Bakken. I'm currently living in southern California, working for Carey Nordstrand at Nordstrand Guitars. I've been a bass player since July of 1996, playing both upright and bass guitar. I've played in many different bands and orchestras, but mostly just for fun.

I started building basses back in 2004 when I enrolled in the Musical String Instrument Repair- Guitar program at Southeast Technical College in Red Wing, MN. In that program I learned to repair, set up, and build guitars and bass guitars. I graduated the 9 month program in the spring of 2005.

The next year I went to school at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, MN and got a diploma in Wood Finishing Technologies. Red Wing gave me a decent foundation on how to build an instrument, but I wanted to learn more about how to really make my basses look their best, so I decided to go to DCTC. While at school there, I learned to apply, repair, restore, and remove many different types of finishes.

As far as my work experience with guitar repair and building, I started off at a small music store maintaining rental instruments during the summer, then moved on to doing repairs and setups on new and vintage guitars/bass at Brown's Guitar Factory in Inver Grove Heights, MN. While at Brown's, I also did some bass guitar building, but never completed an instrument there.

Now I'm working for Carey Nordstrand, doing a fair amount of the woodworking for both the custom bass line and the Nordy line.

If anybody has questions about bass building or wood finishing, don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks for reading! See you in the forums.

Chris

I dunno about "all" the info, but there are books and videos on amazon regarding building and repairing guitars & basses.

Sorry Chris, I'll answer your question soon. My computer decided to die a couple days ago, so I have no computer at my place. I'll let you know the names of a few books I have when things are up and running again.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to everybody. Got a new computer and now it's up and running! Here's some info:

As far as finding "a place" to find all the info you need to build a bass guitar, there are very few. For bass, it seams that you need to compile many sources together to get all of the information you need. I haven't come across any book or video that only deals in bass construction but then again, I haven't looked for a while either. Here are a few books that I have that will help steer you in the right direction.

-Building Electric Guitars by Martin Koch.
-Make Your Own Electric Guitar (second edition) by Melvyn Hiscock.
-Guitar Finishing, Step by Step by Stewart-McDonald

I don't own theses, but I thought I'd let you know they exist:
There are a couple bass guitar plans on the Musical Instrument Makers Forum.
https://secure.mimf.com/order.htm

There are also schools you can attend to get a full education on instrument construction. I went to Southeast Technical College in Red Wing, Minnesota and got a lot out of that program, but there are others out there. I believe that Curbow has a school that pretty much centers around bass building. I don't know anybody who has been through that program, but I checked it out on their website and it looks pretty cool.

Hope that helps a little bit. Let me know if you have any questions.

Exclamation

On a quick note, I'm not longer working at Nordstrand. I'm back home in the Twin Cities metro area.

Not officially, but I might be willing to take on some simple projects.
