Amp EQ Woes

Hi! I'm thinking of buying an Ampeg SVT-350 off my buddy, but I'm originally a guitar player and am getting inconsistant results with tone and volume. Does anyone have a manual or any adivce on getting the most out of this stack, or perhaps a better product I should check out? Thanks....
